Is Complete Cure from Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) Really Possible?!
One of the most common questions asked by people and health enthusiasts is:
“It is said in modern medicine that the Hepatitis B virus cannot be completely cured. So how do you say that complete cure is possible?!”
Yes, this is a logical question, but it contains some confusion.
Modern science has never said: “It is impossible to cure Hepatitis B virus.” Instead, it has stated precisely:
“Until now, there is no medicine in modern medicine capable of completely eradicating the virus from the body.”
So, when we say that Hepatitis B virus disease can be completely cured, it does not mean that we contradict or ignore science.
Some think that this statement contradicts what modern medicine says and consider it a kind of misinformation or false hope, based on a widespread phrase: “Complete cure from this virus is impossible.” But the scientific truth is more accurate than this simplified phrase. Modern science has never declared that curing Hepatitis B virus is impossible; rather, it clearly stated: “Until now, there is no modern medicine capable of completely eradicating this virus from the body.” This is a fundamental difference between impossibility and the absence of an effective treatment so far.
To understand this issue deeply, we must refer to the biological characteristics of this virus. HBV is a DNA virus belonging to the Hepadnaviridae family, and it is characterized by its high ability to enter liver cells and settle in them. The main problem is that after entering the liver cell, it converts its genetic material into a stable form scientifically known as cccDNA — a circular form of DNA that remains dormant inside the nucleus of the cell. This form is not affected by modern drugs, nor is it easily detected by the immune system. Therefore, the virus can remain inactive for years and then reactivate at any moment.
Modern treatments such as Tenofovir, Entecavir, and Interferon-alpha are widely used to reduce viral replication, decrease its presence in the blood, and prevent serious complications like liver cirrhosis and liver cancer. However, they cannot eliminate cccDNA. Hence, medically, it is said that the patient’s condition has “improved” or the disease has “stabilized,” without saying it is “completely cured,” because these drugs reduce the amount of virus in the blood, alleviate symptoms, and prevent disease progression, but they cannot fully remove the virus nor get rid of cccDNA inside the cells.
Therefore, global health organizations such as the WHO, CDC, and AASLD confirm that at present, there is no treatment for Hepatitis B virus that leads to complete cure.
But this does not mean that science has closed all doors to cure! Research confirms that a number of patients may recover naturally without drug treatment, depending on the strength of their immune system and their health conditions.
